Independent Living Facilities offer separate apartments, usually in larger buildings for seniors who enjoy hotel-type services while maintaining their independence.
The following is usually included in the monthly price:
- Rent for your apartment
- All utilities except for personal phones and special cable TV channels
- All meals served restaurant style in a common dining room with a waiter or waitress
- Weekly laundry, apartment cleaning and linen changing.
- Activities such as exercise classes, games, religious services, guest speakers, performances, senior socials and trips are provided for your enjoyment
- Transportation to appointments and shopping and for trips
Assisted Living Facilities include everything listed in Independent Living Facilities plus:
- Personal care services such as bathing, dressing and grooming
- Medication supervision
- Other services as required
Board and Care Homes are licensed by the state and are privately owned and operated. They offer all services listed in independent and assisted living plus extra personal care. This is all provided in a home like setting usually accommodating six residents in private or shared rooms.
Alzheimer’s & Dementia Homes are units that provide care in a safe and controlled environment. They offer all the services listed above. The staff is trained in caring for patients with memory loss. In addition, the facility is designed and constructed to assist with the special needs of these clients.
Life Care and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) requires an entrance fee as well as monthly fees, and some offer the option of owning equity within the association. They include all of the amenities and activities offered by any of the other facilities and more. Three levels of care are provided - independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing - so they can take care of you through all the stages of your life. They guarantee complete lifetime care. Some now have separate Alzheimer’s units onsite as well.
